Fusing with the Spirit.

i love thinking about the differences in the two relationshipsraava saw wan as an equal and a friendwhile vaatu saw unalaq as an inferior and a toolwhich can be seen in the way the two of them treat their hostsraava warns wan when she’s reaching the limits of his body because she doesn’t want to hurt himwhile vaatu grotesquely stretches the shape of unalaq’s body without a second thought. via nyenuma

The visuals definitely make the differences really clear, don’t they?

To draw the implications out further… Unalaq’s transformation seems to be really painful, given the shift in his expression when the dark energy spreads over him, while Wan’s seems significantly less so.  And the dialogue suggests a significant difference, too.  Raava’s line is “We are bonded forever,” which maintains the duality between Wan and Raava even as they share the same body; Unalaq’s line is “We are now one,” which denies that any distinction between Vaatu and himself remains (which is reminiscent of Vaatu’s insistence on calling Korra “Raava”).

And, of course, Korra’s fusion with Raava is significantly different from either of the others — she and Raava touch the energy beam together without any possession involved, and Raava’s energy is completely contained within Korra after they fuse instead of bursting out either in the form of an energy beam from her eyes and the throat (like Wan) or an explosion that mutates her entire body (like Unalaq).
